Due to the vivid racial inequities that still exist in our society, many corporations have made bold and expansive commitments to improve Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) within the sphere of their corporate influence. To accomplish such a task, businesses have appointed DE&I leaders, elevated DE&I performance to the CEO’s office, established metrics to measure performance, and created significant strategic plans to address the issues.
We are cautiously optimistic that the needle will move significantly, however, as the famous business guru Peter Drucker once said, “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Strategy is accelerated when culture is aligned and impeded when it is not. Corporate leaders and Boards need to be mindful that if their DE&I strategy is not aligned with their corporate culture, there will be disappointing results.
Well written statements, Corporate edicts, mandated training and awareness programs, and recruiting efforts focused on improving your companies DE&I results will fall flat if they are not grounded in the reality of your corporate culture. Understand your corporate culture and consciously leverage its attributes to improve your chances of success.
